In light of cyclonic storm, the Deputy Commissioner of East Garo Hills District, Meghalaya, has announced the immediate closure of all schools and colleges on May 28, 2024. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the district over the next 24 hours.
A moderate earthquake struck the East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, on May 6, 2024. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the quake measured 3.4 on the Richter scale and occurred at 12:17 am (Asia/Kolkata GMT +5.30).

Two young men from Assam along with their hired driver have been found murdered, their bodies burnt beyond recognition and buried in two shallow graves in the Rongmil area, 15 kms from Rongjeng in East Garo Hills.
