Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Wednesday reassured that the State government remains steadfast in balancing public interests and fulfilling its mandate, despite facing criticism over concerns on the delay in relocating hawkers from the Khyndailad area.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Wednesday said relocation of hawkers will take time in view of the ongoing elections to the autonomous district councils (ADCs) in the Khasi and Jaintia regions.
The process of rehabilitating over 200 hawkers and street vendors have started in order to make Khyndailad a ‘pedestrian zone’ and a ‘music hub’ – to attract and welcome tourists and visitors to Shillong, also known as the music capital of India.
These are some of the hardy, simple village folks who have tread miles to sell fresh seasonal fruits, lentils mix (chana chur) and even car accessories to the halted traffic near Umiam Bridge
The exercise is necessary to make Khyndailad as a ‘pedestrian zone’ and as a ‘music hub’ – to welcome tourists and visitors to Shillong, also known as the music capital of India.
