Shillong, Feb 5: Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Wednesday said relocation of hawkers will take time in view of the ongoing elections to the autonomous district councils (ADCs) in the Khasi and Jaintia regions.
Speaking to reporters, Lyngdoh said, “Well in view of the elections to the ADCs, the services of a lot of our government officials have been pressed into election duties and also ministers including deputy chief minister in-charge urban affairs, whose department is directly responsible to this particular issue of relocating of hawkers, that is why it is taking more time.”
“But as he has shared and I had also shared with you last time, the process will be on and it is just a matter of time now because we have also gone ahead with the identification of new locations for these hawkers beginning with Khyndailad area first,” he informed.

On the hawkers’ association questioning the decision taken by just a “provisional” town vending committee in regards to the issue, Lyngdoh said, “As I kept telling you the associations have already been part of the process. We have been in a constant discussion with them for the past one year, it is difficult to please everybody but for us first and foremost is the interest of all citizens, all users of roads and footpaths and therefore, we should be able to ensure the interest of one section of society should not stand in the way or impede or clash with the interest of another section of society.”
If relocation will take place on February 7, the minister however said, “We already have clearly defined our goals and action plans but for details on the matter, the department of urban affairs is the nodal department and they will be in a better position to answer your query.”
