SHILLONG, JULY 22: Day 2 of the State-Level Subroto Mukherjee Cup 2026 turned into a goal-fest as schools from all 11 districts went head-to-head in the Under-15 Boys, Under-17 Boys and Under-17 Girls categories.
Played at SSA Stadium, MFA Turf, and Mawlai Madan Heh, the tournament is being run by the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs as part of the state’s push to spot and groom footballers for the national stage.
The Under-15 Boys in Polo saw East Jaintia Hills’ Step by Step Sec. School open with a 5-1 result against West Garo Hills’ St. Claret, with Mewasolaki Rymbai scoring twice in quick succession.
West Jaintia Hills’ North Liberty then beat West Khasi Hills’ Anderson 4-0, while East Khasi Hills’ Umpohliew Jingtip posted the largest margin of the day in the group with a 6-0 win over South Garo Hills’ Baghmara.
Bomtius Dkhar bagged a brace for the winners. Eastern West Khasi Hills’ Little Star and East Garo Hills’ Mangsang shared points after a 2-2 draw.In the Under-17 Boys at MFA Turf, North Garo Hills’ Bajengdoba edged a 4-3 thriller over West Jaintia Hills’ Amwi, thanks to two goals from Chukam R. Marak.
East Jaintia Hills’ Wapung Sec. School had a more comfortable outing, defeating South West Garo Hills’ Okkapara 4-0 with Jeffarson Phawa scoring a hat-trick.
Ri-Bhoi’s Myngken Christian were equally clinical, beating Eastern West Khasi Hills’ Little Star 5-1 as Chanjib Chetry netted four times.
West Khasi Hills’ Dapboklang Giri Memorial rounded off the day with a 6-0 win over South West Khasi Hills’ Balang Mawlangwir, led by Iohborlang Lyngkhoi’s four-goal haul.
The Under-17 Girls at Mawlai saw three one-sided results and one deadlock. West Jaintia Hills’ North Liberty put 12 past South West Garo Hills’ St. Claret, with Elizabeth Thianglai and Baiarbha Nongrum both hitting hat-tricks.
West Khasi Hills’ Lurmangkara beat West Garo Hills’ Montford 4-0 behind a hat-trick from Natasha Kharjahrin, and East Khasi Hills’ Tyrsad defeated South Garo Hills’ Rangku Memorial 9-0 with Ha-I-sha Myrthong also scoring three.
East Jaintia Hills’ Lotus and South West Khasi Hills’ Rangthong Christian played out the day’s only 0-0 draw.
With group matches wrapping up tomorrow, the focus now shifts to the semi-finals on July 24.
Officials said the high-scoring matches and standout individual displays underline the progress of school football in Meghalaya under the state’s continued backing for youth sports.
