The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) in Ri Bhoi District has officially lodged a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi District, demanding legal measures be taken against those responsible for alleged extortion of funds from vehicles transporting chickens bound for export to Meghalaya.

In a major development, Meghalaya Police lobbed tear gas shells to disperse protestors, who had gathered in large numbers at Post Office in Shillong.

The leaders of the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) were summoned by the City Police at Sadar PS on Monday for wearing black as their uniform, citing a violation of Section 171 CrPc.

This was done following the untoward incident during the public hearing on August 24 and the alleged instigating of police by two employees of the factory to lathi charge the protesting villagers.
