The High Court of Meghalaya has given its verdict to a PIL directing the state government to ensure uninterrupted power supply to hospitals and emergency centres in the state even as the state continues to grapple with load shedding for a few hours, everyday.
The Meghalaya High Court on Monday dismissed a PIL related to the demolition of a single storied old Assam-style building of the Pine Mount School as the matter has been left to the prerogative of the state government even as it remarked that ‘development and progress cannot always be stalled on the basis of sentiments’.
Hearing a PIL on the cleanliness of Umiam Lake, the Division Bench said the Meghalaya Waterbodies (Preservation and Conservation) Guidelines, 2023 do not deal with the most serious aspect of buildings and construction mushrooming around waterbodies.
The Court however said in the status report filed on behalf of the State today, some figures have been given indicating the list of essential service providers which are exempt from load-shedding, but the present demand and supply figures have not been indicated, nor has the State detailed the measures adopted to augment the supply of electricity.
