Continuous heavy rainfall over the past three days has triggered multiple landslides across various parts of Sikkim, disrupting daily life and road connectivity. Meanwhile, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the state, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days.
The vehicle veered off the road and fell about 700 to 800 feet gorge at Vertical Veer, near Dalopchand Dara along Rhenock Rongli state highway, popularly known as Silk Route, in Pakyong District.
In a significant development, a bomb swept during Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in October 2023, was diffused near National High-10 in Bardang, 20th Mile in Sikkim on Thursday.
According to information received, the landslide struck the power station in Balutar, Sikkim around 7:30 am at the dam site. The area reported several minor landslides in the past few days and therefore most of the residents were evacuated from the site.
The meeting was also attended by the Secretary, the Tourism & Civil Aviation Department, the Director of Commerce & Industries and other senior officials of the department on July 31.
Chief Justice of the High Court of Sikkim, Bishwanath Somadder, administered the oath of office to the newly appointed Governor of Sikkim, Om Prakash Mathur.
