The Hima Khyrim concluded its annual Lehniam and Shad Nongkrem festival at Smit on Tuesday, bringing together hundreds of men, women, and children clad in traditional attires to celebrate and renew their bonds with the earth, the harvest, and the divine.

The Nongkrem Dance Festival or the ‘Shad Pomblang’ this year concluded amidst a sea of people from various villages in Khasi Hills and several tourists flocking to the courtyard of the grand ‘Iing Sad’ at the Smit Village, the capital of the Khyrim Syiemship, to witness one of the oldest traditional rituals of the Khasi Tribe.
Like other dance festival in Meghalaya, Nongkrem Dance Festival is also performed to pacify the all powerful Goddess Ka Blei Synshar for rich and good harvest and also prosperity of the people.

This precaution comes in response to past incidents where inaccurate information about the festival led to misunderstandings among those unfamiliar with its significance.
When Hub News tried to get more information, a top police official neither denied nor acknowledged these connections and speculations. He simply remarked, “As of now the case is under investigation and they (arrested NLCN members) have not revealed anything on this.”
