Shillong, Oct 31: The Nongkrem dance, is a cultural festival of the Khasis in Meghalaya which is celebrated during Autumn at Smit. Nongkrem festival is a five day long religious festival known as Ka Pomblang Nongkrem dance is popularly known as Nongkrem dance.

Like other dance festival in Meghalaya, Nongkrem Dance Festival is also performed to pacify the all powerful Goddess Ka Blei Synshar for rich and good harvest and also prosperity of the people.

This year, the dance festival is slated for November 1 and 2.

Nongkrem Dance Rituals

The high priest performs the Pomblang ceremony along with the Syiem of Khyrim. He offers oblation to a Lei Shyllong; the God of Shyllong peak by sacrificing a cock.

One of the important part of this Nongkrem festival is the sacrifice of goats (Pomblang). Following this sacrifice, the offerings made to the ancestor and ancestress of the ruling clan to the first uncle to the deity of Shillong peak.

Who takes part in this Nongkrem Dance?

The religious part of the festival begins with the dance. The dance is performed by the unmarried girls in their vibrant and cultural costumes and jewellery. In the dance, the women move very slowly but the men’s are seen dancing in more vigorous and energetic way. The men performs the dance by holding a sword in their right hand and usually a white Yak hair whisk in their left hand.
