Cabinet Minister and government spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh on Tuesday said the reopening of the Them Iew Mawlong road has nothing to do with the resolution to relocate the 342 families from the area.
The government has written to allot some land next to Harijan Colony, which would allow the residents to develop the area themselves, saving the government a significant amount of money, which otherwise would have been spent on shifting them to European Ward
Members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Save Shillong Sikhs (SSS) from Punjab have expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s proposal to relocate the residents of Them Iew Mawlong in Shillong.
Addressing media persons, SGPC activist Jagmohan Singh said, "We had a constructive meeting and we are hopeful that the problem of the residents of Punjabi Lane will be solved sooner or later."
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has emphasized that the government is committed to resolving the long-pending issue of relocating the residents of Harijan Colony, also known as Them Iew Mawlong, without further delay, even as government has agreed to provide HPC more time.
Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday said the government will be meeting within this week to take a call on the Harijan Panchayat Committee’s (HPC) request for more time to respond to the proposal for relocation of 342 families from Them Iew Mawlong or Harijan colony.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by the deputy chief minister incharge home Prestone Tynsong in presence of deputy chief minister incharge urban affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar with the delegation of the HPC and Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Mangament Committee (DSGMC) here.
The Meghalaya High Court has granted six weeks’ time to the state government and the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) to resolve the long pending issue pertaining to the relocation of 342 families from Them Iew Mawlong.
