HPC, SGPC hopeful of resolving relocation of Punjabi Lane from Them Iew Mawlong soon

Must read

Shillong, Sept 25: A delegation of the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) after a meeting with the chief secretary DP Wahlang on Wednesday expressed confidence that the issue concerning the 342 families from Them Iew Mawlong will soon be resolved before implementation of the government’s decision to relocate them.

The meeting was held based on the direction of the state government. The chief secretary has been asked to submit a report on the outcome of the meeting with the delegation (in regards to their decision on the government’s blueprint for relocation) for final decision on the matter.

Addressing media persons, SGPC activist Jagmohan Singh said, “We had a constructive meeting and we are hopeful that the problem of the residents of Punjabi Lane will be solved sooner or later.”

He said the issue is of concern to them because the Sikh community have come 200 years ago from Punjab to Meghalaya and the SGPC have come to express its solidarity with them.

“We are not here to create any trouble. We are here to help the government to resolve the problem in an amicable and proper manner,” he said while adding that the delegation was not fully satisfied and that is why they are raising some concerns and these are still under discussion so that things can be ironed out in order to come up with good solution.

“Subsequent to that, the deputy chief minister had already said that the matter now left to be dealt by chief secretary and that is why we are meeting the chief secretary now and we are waiting for an invitation from the government,” he said.

Asked, the SGPC activist refused to disclose the outcome of the meeting by saying, “The meeting is part of the ongoing discussion. We have presented our views and it is still at an infant stage. We cannot share anything with the media at this stage.”

It may be mentioned here that the government had come up with a blueprint after rejecting the April 25, 2022-proposal of the HPC that 200 square meters of land be provided to each of the 342 families within the European ward besides bearing the cost of construction of their homes.

On August 31, 2022, the state government had announced its decision to construct housing flats at the 2.5 acres of land belonging to the SMB for relocation of the 342 families.
