PM Modi reviews Assam flood situation, assures full support: Sonowal

Dibrugarh, July 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke with Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to review the flood situation in Assam and assured the state of all possible support as rescue and relief operations continue in the affected districts.

Sonowal, who is visiting flood-hit areas in Upper Assam, said the Prime Minister enquired in detail about the ground situation and the ongoing relief efforts.

“Received a call from Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi ji a short while ago, who took detailed stock of the ongoing flood situation in Assam. I am currently in Dibrugarh, visiting the affected areas, assessing the ground situation and standing with our affected brothers and sisters,” Sonowal posted on X.

He said the Prime Minister has always remained deeply concerned about Assam and noted that an Inter-Ministerial Central team has already reached the state to assess the damage and coordinate relief measures.

“The Modi Government stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of Assam and has assured all necessary support for relief and rehabilitation,” Sonowal said, thanking the Prime Minister for his continued concern and support.

Speaking to reporters in Dibrugarh, the Union Minister said 11 districts have been affected in the latest wave of floods, with Nazira, Sivasagar, Sonari and Charaideo among the worst-hit areas in Upper Assam.

He said the Assam government has been carrying out rescue operations on a war footing, with all departments working in close coordination to provide relief to flood-affected families.

Sonowal added that both Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have been closely monitoring the situation through Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

On Saturday, Sonowal visited relief camps at Lakhimi Nagar ME School and Bir Lachit Borphukan College in Sivasagar district, where he interacted with displaced families and reviewed the availability of food, drinking water, healthcare and other essential services. He directed officials to ensure that no flood-affected family faces hardship in accessing basic necessities.
