Residents of Sekurberia village under Hima Jirang along the Meghalaya-Assam border have been living in fear and keeping a close vigil on their fields due to frequent arrival of wild elephants in their agricultural lands, intent on destroying their crops.
Northeast’s premier biodiversity organization, Aaranyak on Monday expressed its deep concern and outrage regarding the recent incident involving the death of a female wild elephant inside the Numaligarh Refinery Ltd campus in Golaghat district of Assam.
According to reports, the incident occurred last night when a herd of wild elephants was roaming in the area, and one of the calves accidentally fell into a well situated near a local residence.
A herd of wild elephants in search of food entered Darechikgre village, outside Tura, in the early morning hours of Tuesday causing substantial damage to newly constructed cottages at a tourism site where work has been underway.
