Imphal, April 7: Tension gripped Manipur’s Thoubal district after a mob set fire to the residence of BJP Minority Morcha’s Manipur president, Md Asker Ali, for supporting the Waqf Amendment Act.
In response, the district administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS across the entire Lilong Assembly constituency on Monday.
The order, issued by the district magistrate, prohibits the assembly of five or more people and bans the public from carrying firearms, swords, sticks, stones, or other lethal weapons.

According to reports, on Sunday night, a mob of 7,000-8,000 people, armed with lathis and stones, stormed Ali’s residence in the Lilong Sambrukhong Mamei area and set it ablaze.
Ali had earlier expressed support for the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, through a social media post on Saturday. Following the attack, he issued an apology on Sunday night, retracting his statement and condemning the Act.
In a fresh Facebook post in Manipuri, Ali stated:
“My name is Asker Ali from Lilong Haoreibi Sambrukhong. I posted videos and shared my comments on social media regarding the Waqf Amendment Bill, which was recently passed in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. I feel deeply sorry for what I said. I will not do it again. I want to clarify that I do not support the Waqf Amendment Bill, and it should be repealed.”
Ali, a Meitei-Pangal (Manipuri Muslim) leader representing the Lilong constituency in Thoubal district, had initially endorsed the bill but later withdrew his support.
