Agartala, Nov 2: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken suo-motu cognizance of three recent cases of abuse and harassment against women in the state, ordering thorough investigations into each incident. The commission, led by former Tripura High Court Judge Swapan Chandra Das, has instructed the concerned authorities to submit detailed reports within two to three weeks.
One of the incidents involved the brutal beating and public humiliation of a married woman in the Bagber area of Sepahijala district, where she was disrobed and paraded naked. The THRC condemned the act, stating that such treatment of a woman is an affront to any civilized society. Referring to Supreme Court observations on women’s rights, the commission expressed shock over the incident occurring in Tripura, a state committed to the rule of law.
The THRC has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to conduct a comprehensive investigation into this case and submit a report within three weeks. So far, three individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, while three others remain at large.
The THRC has also responded to media reports of a ragging incident at Tripura Medical College, a semi-government institution. The commission has requested a detailed report from the college principal within three weeks, emphasizing that ragging is a serious violation of human rights and a criminal offense. It has also ordered an independent investigation by the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of West Tripura district.
The final case under review involves a woman allegedly forced into marriage. The THRC has demanded reports on each case, underscoring the need for prompt and decisive action to uphold the human rights and safety of all citizens.
