Shillong, April 8: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shillong on Tuesday has issued a yellow alert for all districts of Meghalaya from April 8 to April 12, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy rainfall at isolated places.
According to the latest weather warning bulletin and maps released by the IMD, all 12 districts including East Khasi Hills, West Garo Hills and others are likely to experience unstable weather conditions throughout the week. While the alert covers the entire state, special attention has been drawn to East Khasi Hills and West Garo Hills, where the forecast indicates a higher likelihood of thunderstorms coupled with heavy rainfall on multiple days.
“Thunderstorm/lightning is likely at isolated places across the state every day, with some districts expected to receive heavy rainfall as well,” the bulletin said. The yellow alert, categorized as “Watch – Be Aware”, advises residents to stay alert and be prepared for sudden changes in weather.

The IMD also noted that the intensity of rainfall may range from 64.5 mm to over 115.5 mm in some areas, especially during peak activity on April 9 and 10. Visual maps highlight that Day 3 (April 10) and Day 5 (April 12) could see the most widespread weather activity across the region.
Residents in vulnerable areas, particularly in East Khasi Hills, which includes the state capital Shillong and West Garo Hills, have been urged to exercise caution. Local authorities may take precautionary measures to ensure public safety.
The IMD has recommended staying updated through the ‘Mausam’ mobile app or official channels for real-time forecasts and alerts.
