Top ULFA-I leader dies at outfit’s camp in Myanmar

Guwahati, Nov 24: Senior ULFA-I leader Bubul Handique alias Major Golap Axom has reportedly died at the outfit’s camp in an undisclosed location in Myanmar.

This was confirmed by self-styled “commander-in-chief” of ULFA-I, Paresh Baruah, via a statement.

According to reports, Bubul Handique, a senior member of the ULFA-I, died on Thursday at around 2:58 pm. He was suffering from cardiovascular-related ailments.

Handique hailed from Bhalukoni village in Charaideo district of Assam. He had joined the banned militant outfit from Assam in 1998.

Reportedly, there is a pall of gloom in the village of the senior ULFA-I leader after the news of his demise spread.

On September 20, top ULFA-I leader, Lachit Hazarika alias Brigadier Salim Asom, was awarded capital punishment in Myanmar’s Sagaing area in Hachi camp. While Bornali, a boxer from Tinsukia and a member of the banned outfit, has been also served the death penalty by the armed militant group.

Salim Asom was close to ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah and had joined the outfit in the 1990s. While Bornali had joined the outfit in the year 2021.
