Guwahati, July 15: A 50-year-old trader, Ashok Goyal, was shot dead at point-blank range on NH17 in the Kalyanpur village area near Goalpara town on Sunday evening leading to anger in the trading community.
According to reports, a four-member gang of assailants also robbed cash from the Tata Punch vehicle in which Goyal was traveling from Dhupdhara to his hometown in Goalpara.
The incident occurred in a densely forested area of NH17 between Agia and Goalpara towns at around 7 pm.
Sources said that Goyal, his son Nayan, and the driver were in the vehicle during the incident. A gang of 4-5 dacoits in a Maruti Alto had been chasing them from the Krishnai area. They forcibly stopped Goyal’s vehicle in the uninhabited Kalyanpur area and attempted to rob them.
Nayan Goyal, the victim’s son, who was sitting in the front seat, was pulled out of the car by the robbers. The robbers then tried to snatch a bag of cash from Ashok Goyal, who was in the back seat. During the confrontation, the dacoits shot Ashok Goyal at point-blank range, leading to his death.
After the shooting, the armed robbers fled the scene. Upon receiving information about the incident, police teams from Agia and Goalpara rushed to the spot. Police later recovered a 7.65mm pistol near the crime scene, believed to be the murder weapon.
The businessman was sent to Goalpara Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The deceased, Ashok Goyal, owned a transport company named Tirupati Roadways and was well-known in the area. Police stated that while the primary motive appears to be robbery, they have not ruled out business rivalry or other reasons behind his murder.
