Guwahati, May 16: If you are planning to board a flight at Guwahati Airport, it is advisable to leave for the airport much earlier than usual.

Guwahati Airport and the surrounding area will be significantly busier from today due to the annual Hajj pilgrimage, which has commenced. A large crowd has gathered at the airport to see off the pilgrims, leading to traffic congestion.

Notably, two daily flights from LGBI Airport Guwahati to Medina, Saudi Arabia, will operate until May 25. On the first day of the pilgrimage, the Northeast Hajj Committee organized an inaugural program at Haji Musafirkhana, a temporary facility set up to assist Hajj pilgrims at Guwahati Airport.

Hundreds from Assam, Meghalaya and other northeastern states arrived at the airport to attend the ceremony and bid farewell to their loved ones. This influx caused significant traffic issues at the airport, as numerous private vehicles, including buses, crowded the roads leading to Guwahati Airport.

The Guwahati Airport has limited parking and vehicle movement space. Consequently, many passengers, unaware of the situation, experienced delays and had a challenging time reaching the airport on time.

Many people took to social media to report the issue to the authorities. One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “Sir, hundreds of buses carrying Hajj pilgrims to Guwahati Airport are creating chaos in the airport and its adjoining areas,” tagging the CMO, Assam Police, City Police, and other authorities.

Another user commented, “Please see the condition outside the airport. There is a 30-minute traffic jam on the airport road due to Hajj and parked vehicles across the roads.”
