Guwahati, Jan 15: In a tragic incident, an elephant was electrocuted to death in Assam’s Golaghat district on Sunday night.
The incident occurred in the Letekujan area of Greater Morangi in Golaghat district.
According to locals, a herd of elephants had been roaming in the Morangi area for the past six months.
“On the nigh of the Uruka, one of the elephants in the Letekujan group came into contact with a live electric wire near National Highway 39, resulting in its immediate death,” said a local resident.
Meanwhile, forest officials arrived at the spot and recovered the carcass of the elephant.
“We have done an autopsy of the elephant. But the exact cause of the electrocution is still under investigation,” said a forest official.
Around 250 elephants have died over the last 10 years in Assam. The northeastern state had the second-highest population of wild elephants (5,719) in India after Karnataka, as per a 2017 census.
