According to eyewitness accounts from locals, the wild elephant ventured into the Dhirai Majuli village area, caught the three victims off guard, and brutally trampled them, resulting in their untimely demise.

“The forest guards were conducting routine patrolling duties when the wild elephant unexpectedly emerged from the forest,” explained Nipen Kalita, the West Divisional Forest Officer. “The enraged elephant chased and fatally trampled them,” he added.

Conflicts between humans and elephants are a growing concern in Assam. This state records one of the highest numbers of such incidents in India. The region’s dense forests are home to many elephants that occasionally wander into human settlements, leading to tragic encounters. Conservation efforts are ongoing, but habitat loss and human encroachment into forested areas exacerbate these conflicts.
