Williamnagar, July 5:In an important collaboration between the National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP), Department of Health (Meghalaya) and Sambandh Health Foundation (SHF), a comprehensive training session on COTPA (Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act) Law Enforcement was conducted today at DRDA Hall, Williamnagar.
Led by Dr. Lana Nongbri (State Nodal Officer, Meghalaya) and Dr. Barkaraine Marak (District Nodal Officer, East Garo Hills), the NTCP team spearheaded the training, which aimed to equip police officers and personnel with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively enforce tobacco control laws.
Distinguished speakers at the event included Dr. Siddharth K Sangma from Tura Christian Hospital and Shri Pramod Kumar representing Sambandh Health Foundation. They shared essential facts and imparted valuable training to the attending officers.
Notably, Shri Siddharth Kumar Ambedkar, IPS, Superintendent of Police, East Garo Hills District, graced the program and emphasized the officers’ crucial role in safeguarding future generations from the harmful effects of tobacco products. He urged active participation and commitment in this vital mission.
The training session encompassed both theoretical and practical components, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of COTPA law enforcement. Encouragingly, the police personnel of the district exhibited great interest and enthusiasm. Immediately after the training, they took proactive action by booking 21 offenders, demonstrating their newfound expertise in enforcing tobacco control regulations.
This training session serves as a significant step forward in promoting public health and protecting communities from the detrimental effects of tobacco. It highlights the dedication and collaboration between governmental agencies and health organizations in combating the tobacco menace and safeguarding the well-being of future generations.
