Transforming youth for nation building: Tura’s Don Bosco College Principal talks about NCC’s role in youth development

Must read

Tura, Nov 25: The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is well known for providing yeomen services, and providing discipline and guidance to youth, being an integral part of many schools and colleges across the nation. The official website of NCC lists its aim as: developing character, comradeship, discipline, a secular outlook, the spirit of adventure and ideals of selfless service amongst young citizens.

It is known for making an invaluable contribution towards national integration and nation building through their yeomen service of transforming the youth of the country into a cohesive and disciplined force. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had once stated that India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi was once an NCC cadet. This shows the repute and importance of NCC in moulding the youth into leaders of tomorrow.

As NCC north eastern car rally flagged-in at Don Bosco College in Tura on Friday evening, Hub News got the opportunity to talk to Fr. Bivan R Mukhim, Principal of Don Bosco College, and understand NCC’s role transforming youths towards nation building. Here are the excerpts from the interview:

Q. What do you have to say about the Car Rally of NCC choosing Don Bosco College?
Ans: It is a great honour and privilege for the Don Bosco College to host this northeast car rally organised by the NCC, on the occasion of 75 years of the NCC.

I would like to congratulate all CTOs, caretakers, officers of the college, as well as cadets from the first, second and third year for preparing for this program. I think it was really well done and prepared well by them. We also have to congratulate all the faculty of Don Bosco College For taking care of this.

Q. Do you think this sends a message to the youths?
Ans: It’s always an opportunity to get the young people (involved in activities), especially when it comes to joining NCC as candidates and later on, to also get into the armed forces. Some of our students who were former cadets have already joined and some of them are already through the process of getting into the armed forces; and some of them are also in the police department. It is one of the ways in which we can encourage more young people to get into the NCC because it has transformed not only the cadets but also the society.
Secondly, through these activities, we will be able to get our students out of any maybe opportunity to get into alcohol or drugs. So, by diverting their (youth) minds, they will be able to get out of such situations.

Q. What message would you personally want to give?

Ans: My message for all the young people is that you don’t get involved into anti-social elements, that will not help us. What we need to do is getting into building the society, building the nation, and more importantly building our state and Garo Hills in particular.
So, I wish young people would channelise their energy from what can be an anti-social element into something concrete to build Meghalaya, to build Garo Hills.
