Guwahati, Oct 30: Ahead of the possible inauguration of the Akhaura-Agartala railway line between India and Bangladesh, a trial run was successfully conducted on Monday, with a Bangladeshi goods train entering Tripura.

The new railway line between the two nations is likely to be inaugurated by Prime Ministers of both the countries on November 1.

The Bangladeshi train with four goods laden wagons entered at Nischintpur railway station, one km inside into the Indian territory of Tripura from the India-Bangladesh border.

Railway officials said the trial operation of the goods train was successful on the newly built 15.064-km long Akhaura (Bangladesh)-Agartala (Tripura, India) rail link project.

The railway line is the result of a decade old Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Bangladesh to start the first Indo-Bangla international railway service between Akhaura (Bangladesh) and Agartala (India). The project also has a historical significance as Akhaura used to be the railway link for Agartala during the colonial era.

Tripura shares an 856 km-long international border with Bangladesh, parts of which are still unfenced owing to local disputes. The state’s only road connectivity with the rest of the country is through Assam and a narrow strip of land in West Bengal’s Siliguri.

After completion of the Indo-Bangla railway project in Tripura, the travel time between Agartala and Kolkata via Dhaka is estimated to be reduced from 31 hours to 10 hours.
