Agartala, July 15: Plastic pollution is as harmful as drug menace since both are challenges for the sustainable development of Tripura, stated Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Saturday.
Dr. Saha was speaking at the programme of ‘Plastic Mukta Tripura Abhijan’ at Town Hall organised by Tripura State Pollution Control Board under the Science and Technology Department.
He appealed to the public to come forward to protect the state from both these evils.
Dr. Saha said that scientific evidence has shown that plastics have around 13000 chemicals out of which 3200 chemicals are very harmful for the environment and health.
The Chief Minister stated that earlier also there were such initiatives but success was limited as public involvement is key for the success and so, he urged the people of the state to realise the threat posed by plastic pollution.
He advised for public awareness against plastic like being done on drugs, and with their involvement the state can move towards a single use and plastic free Tripura.
Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation, Dipak Majumder, Chief Secretary JK Sinha and other senior officials took part in the programme as large number of students from various schools and colleges also attended.
