Agartala, Oct 13: The brutal murder of a woman and her mother on Sunday morning has sent shockwaves across the community in Agartala. A day that is meant for revelries and coming together of community to send off the Goddess Durga to her heavenly abode has been marred by the tragic incident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday in Agartala’s ONGC Netaji Nagar area, plunging the area into mourning.
The accused identified as Samarjit Choudhury has been arrested by police.
According to police, the deceased victims – Tanushree Acharya and her mother Soma Acharya – were attacked by Samarjit, the estranged of Tanushree, with a dao (a machete like weapon) when he saw a post by his wife on social media.
Superintendent of Police (SP) of West Tripura district, Dr Kiran Kumar, informed that Tanushree had posted a photo on Facebook with two young men on Saturday evening, which enraged Samarjit and led him to plot her murder, even though they have been living separately for the past one-and-a-half year, with their divorce case ongoing in court.
Samarjit went to Tanushree’s parent’s house, where she had been staying since their separation, and waited for them to return as they had gone out for puja rituals. When they returned home at around 4 AM, Tanushree was attacked by Samarjit with a dau. Her mother, Soma, was also attacked when she tried to save her. Both women died on the spot due to the injuries, said the SP.
After the attack, Samarjit fled to Madhupur, but was arrested soon. The SP further informed that Samarjit had confessed to murdering Tanushree and her mother.
