Tripura Govt sends special team to North Bengal to assess train accident site

Agartala, June 18: A special two-member team has been sent by the Tripura government to assess the situation at the train accident site.

An emergency meeting was convened at the Tripura State Emergency Operation Centre following the collision of the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express with goods train in North Bengal.

They left from Agartala Railway station on Sunday morning with 1500 passengers.

Addressing a press conference in secretariat, Secretary to the Chief Minister, PK Chakraborty informed that that a special two-member team has been sent by the state government to assess the situation ground situation which had took five people’s live and several injured.

“The team is expected to arrive at the accident location in the evening. So far, five fatalities and 30 injuries have been confirmed. No one of the casualties or injured passengers were from Tripura according to the latest reports,” Chakraborty said.

He further said, “All injured passengers were transported to Bagdogra Hospital for treatment. The Tripura state government will bear all medical expenses and has announced ex gratia payments for any casualties from the state,”.

Chakraborty said the state government is maintaining close coordination with the Northeast Frontier Railway, disaster management authorities, and the local administration of West Bengal to effectively manage the situation.

A help desk has been set up in Agartala Railway station for providing information to the family members and relatives of the passengers who were there in the ill fated train.
