Tripura: Opposition parties unite to prevent split of anti-BJP vote

Must read

Agartala, Aug 12: In a surprising turn of events, leaders from Tripura’s three primary opposition parties – TIPRA Motha, CPI-M, and Congress – convened at the office of Opposition Leader Animesh Debbarma on Saturday to strategize a joint approach for the impending by-election, aiming to prevent the splitting of the anti-BJP vote.

This united front poses a potential concern for the ruling party.

The opposition parties are considering a collaboration against the ruling BJP in the upcoming by-election scheduled for September 5 in the Dhanpur and Bakshanagar constituencies, both falling under the Sepahijala district.

During Saturday’s initial discussions, which lasted over an hour, senior leaders from all three parties were present.

Representing TIPRA Motha was Animesh Debbarma, while Congress was represented by MLA Sudip Roy Barman and Gopal Chandra Roy, along with Tripura Pradesh Congress president Asish Kumar Saha.

CPI-M was represented by MLA Jitendra Chowdhury, who also serves as the party’s state secretary, and former Ministers Manik Dey and Ratan Bhowmik.

Despite their efforts, the leaders were unable to reach a conclusive decision on the matter for the day. However, their intent to prevent the division of the opposition vote against BJP, as seen in the previous assembly election, remains strong.

They pointed out that despite over 60 percent of the state’s voters expressing opposition during last assembly election held early this year, BJP managed to retain power.

This united front among the opposition parties introduces a new dimension to Tripura’s political landscape, setting the stage for a potentially more competitive by-election.
