Agartala, Jan 19: Ten Rohingyas, including women and children, were arrested by Tripura police on Saturday in the Safrikandi area under Kailashahar police station in Unakoti district.

Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a raid at a house where the group had taken refuge. According to Taruni Jamatia, the second officer-in-charge of Irani police station, preliminary interrogation revealed that the detainees were residents of Myanmar. A refugee card identifying them as Myanmar nationals was also recovered.

Among those arrested were six adult women, a 50-day-old infant, and three children aged one, four, and seven. Police have registered a case against them under the BNS Act and Passport Act.

“The group began their journey on January 13 via train from Hyderabad and arrived at Dharmanagar railway station in Tripura on January 16. A local middleman from Safrikandi brought them to his home near the India-Bangladesh border, where they planned to cross into Bangladesh,” Jamatia said.

The homeowner and middleman, however, managed to evade arrest during the raid. Authorities are continuing their investigation.
