Agartala, Aug 18: Dr. Manik Saha, the Chief Minister of Tripura, announced on Friday that the Maitri Setu, an emblem of India-Bangladesh friendship, is likely to commence operations in September. The bridge spans the Feni river, connecting Sabroom town in Tripura with Ramghar in Bangladesh and with its operation the state shall get access to the Chittagong sea port, which is around 72 Kms away from the southern border of Tripura.
Speaking at a Consultation Workshop held at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala, Dr. Saha engaged with leaders representing 19 distinct tribal communities from the state.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the imminent inauguration of the Maitri Setu will herald a new era, bringing into operation the third integrated check post (ICP) at Sabroom. This strategic step will usher in a seamless movement of goods, particularly from the bustling Chittagong sea port in Bangladesh, via this well-positioned land port. The anticipated impact on the region is expected to be substantial.
Dr. Saha underscored the meticulous preparations underway for the September inauguration, an event that will be graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The inauguration of the Maitri Setu is likely to happen virtually during the scheduled visit of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India early next month.
The Chief Minister emphasized the pivotal role Tripura is poised to play as a gateway to Southeast Asia, further solidifying its significance on the international stage.
Notably, the Chief Minister also drew attention to the upcoming establishment of a special economic zone (SEZ) and the enhancements in train connectivity facilitated through Bangladesh. The latter development, connecting Agartala, is also slated for inauguration this year. As a result, the travel duration between Tripura and Kolkata is anticipated to shrink significantly, making the journey a mere eight-hour endeavour.
This integration and accessibility are expected to foster increased economic growth and regional collaboration.
