Guwahati, Jan 28: The Government of Tripura has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Digital India Bhashini Division (DIBD) of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. This agreement marks a significant milestone in Tripura’s efforts to enhance the usage of its rich regional languages and facilitate greater digital participation by citizens in governance.
The MOU signing ceremony took place at Pragna Bhavan in Agartala, during the State-Level Workshop ‘Bhashini Rajyam,’ inaugurated by Pranajit Singha Roy, IT Minister of Tripura. Other dignitaries present included Kiran Gitte, Secretary IT, Government of Tripura; Amitabh Nag, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of DIBD, MeitY; and Jeya Ragul Geshan B, Director IT, Government of Tripura. Bhashini, a transformative initiative under the Digital India program, aims to ensure seamless communication and internet accessibility in 22 Indian languages. Through the medium of voice, Bhashini seeks to bridge the digital and literacy divides.
The workshop outlined Bhashini’s vision for digital inclusivity, showcasing software capabilities such as real-time translation, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and voice-to-voice translation between Indian regional languages and English. The session highlighted the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to achieve high-accuracy translations while emphasizing the roles and responsibilities of the State and DIBD in advancing the mission. Strategies for promoting regional languages on digital platforms and enhancing government software applications were discussed, aiming to reduce the digital divide and increase inclusivity for Tripura’s diverse linguistic communities.
Citizens of Tripura, especially those in rural and tribal areas, often face challenges due to language barriers, with many struggling to navigate software systems in English or Hindi. Bhashini can integrate with existing systems like the CM Helpline, eVidhan, Kisan Sahayata App, and e-Districts, enabling multilingual communication and improving local governance. It can also support educational initiatives by promoting multilingual technologies and enhance the CCTNS Platform by translating FIRs and facilitating voice-based data entry.
Tripura is the first northeastern state and the eighth state in the country to sign an MOU with Bhashini. This pioneering step highlights the state’s commitment to digital inclusivity and citizen-centric governance. Tripura joins a select group of states that have focused on Bhashini, with only four others taking similar steps before.
