Tripura welcomes 18 animals, including Royal Bengal Tigers, in exchange program with Bengal zoo

Agartala, Feb 5: The Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary and Zoo in Tripura welcomed 18 animals, including two majestic Royal Bengal tigers, on Monday, from the North Bengal Zoo as a part of an animal exchange program.

According to Biswajit Das, the Director of Tripura’s Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary and Clouded Leopard National Park, the exchange of animals with the North Bengal Zoo in Siliguri, West Bengal, is being carried out in accordance with the regulations set by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA).

Das also informed that in return, 12 animals from Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary will be sent to the North Bengal Zoo.

According to his statement, besides a pair of Royal Bengal Tigers, Sepahijala also received a pair of leopards, four golden pheasants, four silver pheasants, two peafowls, and four hill mynas.

In exchange, North Bengal will be receiving a lion couple, a pair of spectacle monkeys (also known as ‘Chasma Banar’), two leopard cats, and four blackbucks.

The Sepahijala wildlife sanctuary would be closed for the visitors for two days – on Tuesday and Wednesday – for ensuring safety of incoming and outgoing animals during loading and unloading.
