Trucker’s killing at Mawshun: Sohra MLA urges Govt to provide relief to deceased’s family

Shillong, Sept 21: Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem on Thursday raised a Zero hour notice on the gunning down of a trucker by BSF personnel on the night of May 5, 2023.

Mylliem, during the Autumn Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, urged the government to provide relief to the poor family who have been left with no bread-winner.

He also appealed to the government to take it up with the Government of India (GOI) for some sort of relief to be provided to the family.

On the night of May 5, 2023, Ronin Nongkynrih, a 34-year-old trucker, was travelling along the Pynursla-Dawki road with his cousin brother ferrying buffaloes. It has been alleged that he was shot at by the BSF personnel at Mawshun village.

As per the FIR registered by the complainant at the Pynursla police station, Nongkynrih was travelling with his cousin brother to transport buffaloes, and on reaching Mawshun village, the deceased took a right turn in order to unload the buffaloes. However, at that time, a mini truck of BSF was also following them and firing. The complainant also claimed that the BSF personnel stationed at the checkpost of Mawshun opened fire at a close range, which hit Nongkynrih on his head, resulting in his death.

Whereas, an FIR filed by the officials of the BSF claimed that the BSF deployed for duty at Pynursla-Dawki Road near Wahkdait village had cautioned the driver to stop for checking.

Instead of stopping, the driver tried to escape by hitting and running over the BSF personnel on duty. “The personnel sensing danger fired two rounds in the air at an interval, but the driver did not stop and tried to hit the personnel on duty. Seeing the imminent threat to his life, he fired another round towards the tyre of the truck with the intention of stopping the vehicle, but the driver turned his vehicle to the left and collided with the divider,” BSF mentioned in their FIR against the deceased Ronin Nongkynrih.

Demanding justice for the family, Mylliem said that what was concerning was that till date neither the BSF nor the Government of India has sanctioned any kind of relief to the poor family.

“The families of Nongkynrih are unfortunately not getting the humane consideration that they should be getting. The deceased is survived by his wife and two young children aged between 4 and 3 months old. They belong to a very poor family, and with the death of Nongkynrih, they are left with no other breadwinner for the family,” raised the Sohra MLA.

Urging the state government to take up the matter in the strongest possible manner with the GOI so that justice is done within a fixed time and whatever relief is sanctioned is done accordingly to the norms.

He also urged the state government, given the unusual circumstances of the case, to consider sanctioning ex-gratia assistance from its end.

Home Minister Prestone Tynsong responded stating that cases from both sides were filed and investigation is ongoing, however no one has been arrested in connection with the case.

“The police officials are putting in sincere efforts to ascertain the facts and circumstances of both the cases,” he assured the House.
