Tura College celebrates 11th National Handloom Day

Tura, Aug 7: The Department of Textiles and Apparel Designing (TAD), College of Community Science, Tura, in collaboration with the All India Coordinated Research Project on Women in Agriculture (AICRP-WIA), celebrated the 11th National Handloom Day under the theme “Handlooms: Empowering Women, Empowering the Nation.”

The celebration paid tribute to the region’s rich handloom legacy with the felicitation of selected weavers and allied handloom workers, recognising their outstanding contributions in preserving and promoting traditional crafts. The honoured artisans shared their personal journeys, expressing gratitude for the recognition and inspiring younger generations to embrace traditional weaving.

Dr. Vasanthi Vijayakumar, Vice-Chancellor of Captain Williamson Sangma State University, graced the event as Chief Guest. She underscored the significance of the “Vocal for Local” movement and the deep-rooted connection between handlooms and India’s Swadeshi spirit. She lauded the perseverance and artistry of women weavers in sustaining cultural identity and contributing to the local economy.

Dr. C.P. Suresh, Professor, NEHU Tura Campus, and Dr. Ivone M. Sangma, District Immunization Officer, Government of Meghalaya, attended as Guests of Honour. Dr. Suresh spoke on the sector’s importance in rural livelihoods, while Dr. Sangma emphasized the transformative role of weaving in women’s economic and social empowerment.

The event began with a welcome address by Dr. Anupama Mishra, Head of the TAD Department, followed by opening remarks from Dr. Jyoti V. Vastrad, Dean of the College of Community Science, who highlighted the need to integrate traditional skills into modern sustainable livelihoods.

A handloom exhibition was also inaugurated, showcasing intricate products crafted by local artisans and students. The exhibits drew praise for their cultural depth and craftsmanship.

The programme was coordinated by Dr. Laimayum Jogeeta Devi, Assistant Professor, Department of TAD, and her team. The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks, marking a meaningful celebration of the weavers’ community and their role in shaping Meghalaya’s cultural and economic fabric.
