Tura, Nov 27: With participants from across Meghalaya, Assam, Tripura, Karbi Anglong, and even neighboring Bangladesh, the Tura Me·gong International Literary Festival 2024 stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Garo people and their commitment to preserving their linguistic and cultural legacy.
Held at the scenic DC Park in Tura on November 27, the festival’s second edition was organized by the Department of Garo, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tura Campus, in collaboration with the A·chik Literature Society (ALS) and Don Bosco College. This two-day celebration of Garo language, literature, and culture aims to strengthen the community’s cultural identity through storytelling, folklore, and the arts.
Inaugurating the event, Rakkam A. Sangma, Minister of Education, stressed the importance of safeguarding Garo traditions in the face of modernity. “Our heritage is our identity,” he stated. “Through creative writing and storytelling, we build bridges between our past and future, keeping our traditions alive for the next generation.” Supporting this, Shri Subir Marak, MLA, emphasized the role of Garo folklore in preserving moral values and ancestral wisdom.
The festival’s theme, “Language, Literature, and Culture of the Garos,” highlights the intrinsic connection between cultural identity and creativity. A key highlight was the launch of two publications: Indo-Bangla Cultural Youth Camp Documentation and Gisikni Ku·birong -II by Dr. Rhinkle M. Marak, released by the Chief Guest.
Scholars, including Dr. Jacqueline R. Marak and Dr. Colnat B. Marak, led insightful discussions on Garo literature, with diverse perspectives from speakers across the region. The day ended with a lively musical session by Da Suraka Band, blending traditional and contemporary sounds, creating a bridge between generations.
Day two promises to be equally engaging with Conversations with Authors, featuring notable writers like Mrs. Icylian R. Marak and Dr. Crystal Cornelious D. Marak, followed by discussions on literature’s role in environmental awareness. The grand finale will feature traditional Wangala dances, Garo ethnic fashion, and performances by local artists, celebrating the vibrancy of Garo culture.
The Tura Me·gong International Literary Festival not only honours the rich heritage of the Garos but also fosters cross-cultural dialogue, ensuring that their legacy thrives in the global literary arena.
