Tura, March 26: With Professor Fameline K. Marak assuming office as the new Pro Vice Chancellor (Pro-VC) of NEHU’s Tura campus on Wednesday, a new wave of optimism has swept through the campus with students seeing this as a crucial step towards bridging the gap between students and the administration, and addressing critical student needs.

The lack of basic amenities and essential resources was a recurring theme raised by the students’ representatives, including the necessity for water filters in hostels, along with the resolution of poor water quality. The lack of a dedicated lab assistant and building for the horticulture department, which currently shares space with external entities, are some of the other issues.

Similar infrastructural and staffing deficiencies in departments like MSW and Forestry were also flagged by the representatives. They also stressed that previous communications regarding these problems to the former administrator have yielded no action.

Following her officially taking charge of the Pro-VC’s post, Hub News reached out to Prof. Fameline to understand the factors that compelled her to take up the post after rejecting it in November last year, amidst the hunger strike by the NEHU students in Shillong campus. While she did not want to discuss much, having taken charge of the campus amidst a tumultuous time in the university, she said she agreed to take the post for the welfare and interest of the students and the NEHU community.

Meanwhile, she has already struck a chord with the students and Tura’s NEHU community through an inspirational speech. The students are positive that the new Pro-VC will usher in the much-needed development that the campus needs.

“The students are very pleased and have had a very good interaction with her,” Roda Onchiba N Sangma, general secretary of Garo Students’ Union (GSU) said. “She gave a speech that gave us positive vibes. As a female student, I am very proud of her as a leader,” she added.

Another student, Joyshelman D Sangma, Assistant Secretary of PGSU, called the appointment as a ‘long-standing demand’ of the stakeholders of the Tura campus. “We are happy that we got our new PVC this morning (Wednesday), which was our long-standing demand and we hope that we’ll be able to bring our problems to the administration closer, and bridge the gap between the students and the administration,” he said.

Furthermore, the students’ body anticipate that Prof. Fameline will facilitate improved communication between students and the university administration and concerns such as insufficient lab equipment for science students and an undersized auditorium will be addressed timely.

While the appointment experienced delays, the student community now looks forward to positive changes under the new leadership.
