Tura, June 24: Multiple raids across drug stores in Tura by police have led to the confiscation of several numbers of life saving medical equipment used for breathing assistance after media reports had revealed some store owners selling these items for triple the cost during the covid pandemic.
Vaporizer machines used to assist breathing for seriously ill covid patients that used to be priced for a maximum of Rs 500 were being sold by some pharmacies for Rs 999 on the excuse that the pandemic and lockdown had led to shortage of commodities.
Many customers who purchased these vaporizers for their seriously ill family members had to pay a premium to get one as the pharmacies made illegal profits.
“During the raid 7 number of Dr Ultra Pro Vaporisers priced at Rs 999 were seized. The MRP, prima facie, appears to have been tampered with. The seized exhibits are being handed over to the Drug Controller for further verification and necessary action,” stated the West Garo Hills SP V S Rathore.
The Tura police, from its social media handle, also issued a warning to shopkeepers from overpricing and encouraged customers to come forward if they found any discrepancies in pricing.
Another issue that has cropped up is illegal collection of tax by some groups in Tura market which has now been detected by the new police chief.
“Anyone falling prey to such extortionist may inform the concerned OCs or contact my personal number-7005225721. I will look into the matter personally and initiate strong and necessary action against them,” warned the SP.
