Tura’s World Water Day marathon draws over 300 participants for climate cause

Tura, 21 March: Demonstrating community spirit and a focus on health, the Public Health Engineering Department, West Garo Hills, organized a 10km Marathon Run on Friday morning, as part of the World Water Day 2025 celebrations with this year’s theme being ‘Glacier Preservation’.

Drawing around 339 participants from diverse backgrounds and age groups, the event aimed to educate participants, on the importance of water preservation, create understanding about global warming’s causes and the actions needed to protect water resources.

The marathon started from the Matchakolgre LP School playground and passed via New Tura eroute Bokmagre and ended at the Ballongre playground.

The event was meticulously organized to include categories for general participants, male and female runners, the oldest participant (approximately 64 years old), and the youngest participant (below 12 years old), ensuring inclusivity and broad participation.

Cash prizes for the top spots in both the categories were set at Rs.7000, Rs.5000 and Rs.3000 respectively. There were also consolation prizes of Rs.1000 for finishers in senior category of 50 years and above and in young runners category of 12 years and below.

The marathon was part of a broader initiative to raise awareness and generate action towards water preservation. The event served as a practical way to engage the community in discussions about water conservation and global warming.

While the results of the marathon have been finalized, the prize distribution ceremony will be conducted during the official World Water Day event in Bolwariegre (Darechikgre) under Gambegre block on Saturday.
