Turning odds to Opportunity: Assam man becomes entrepreneur after suffering devastation in Covid pandemic

Must read

Guwahati, March 29: 32-year-old Diganta Das of Assam has set example for others on how to challenge life and overcome financial problems.

Diganta hails from Assam’s Gohour, who went to Bengaluru in 2012 in search for a job. He juggled between many roles, sometimes as a carpenter, other times as a painter and even as a security guard. However, he was satisfied with his job in Bengaluru because he was earning a good amount.

In the same year, he and his friend Surya Thapa joined a company, which made fresh readymade food including idli, dosa and parota. Diganta and his friend Surya worked as a parota maker in the company. They learnt the entire process of making parota and studied the market thoroughly.

They both left for Andhra Pradesh just before the Covid-19 outbreak where they started their own food company with their savings. Unfortunately, Diganta lost his entire savings in the business during the Covid-19 outbreak and subsequent lockdowns. Finding no alternatives, he returned home to Assam.

The financial condition of Das was so bad that he could not even buy a doll or a dress for his daughter.

“I took up any job that came my way. I joined one of my uncles, who is a carpenter, for several months. I earned around Rs 200-Rs 300 daily as my uncle’s helper. But the earnings were too low to run my family of six,” Das said.

He added, “The Covid-19 has affected my life but I took determination that I will come out from this situation.”

Then in 2021, he wondered if his parota-making skills could come handy. Diganta called one Farizul Hoque of Assam’s Udalguri district, who runs a similar venture in Bengaluru, Kerala, Mysore and Hyderabad, and discussed his plan.

Diganta now has a total of 10 employees, two of whom hail from Nepal and the rest are from Assam. Working out of Biswanath Chariali, Diganta has employed eight persons as salesmen. He is currently supplying parota to Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts.

Diganta is a shining example for others who lost their job during Covid-19 pandemic and turned the odd in his favour.
