TURA, March 25: A two-day national workshop on “Building a Strong Foundation: Understanding the National Curriculum Framework of NEP 2020 on Early Childhood Care and Education (NCFECCE)” was inaugurated on Tuesday at the College of Community Science (CCS) in Tura in West Garo Hills.
College of Community Science, Tura is a constituent college of Imphal based Central Agricultural University.
The workshop was inaugurated in the presence of Meghalaya’s Education Minister, Rakkam A Sangma, and Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, Jagdish Chelani. The programme is set to conclude on March 26.
The event aims to deepen understanding of the goals, principles, and structure of the NCFECCE as outlined in the National Education Policy 2020, with a focus on promoting play-based, inclusive, and culturally relevant teaching in early childhood education.
In his address, Education Minister Sangma emphasized the continuous nature of education, stating that learning is an ongoing process that shapes individuals and society. He highlighted the importance of adapting education to contemporary challenges, including climate change, technological advancements, and global crises. He also stressed the need for skill-based education, ensuring that India’s youth are equipped for the future.
Citing the National Education Policy (NEP), he encouraged institutions to integrate traditional knowledge with modern advancements to foster innovation and self-reliance. The Minister also touched upon the importance of maternal and child health, citing various government initiatives aimed at improving education and healthcare accessibility. He reiterated the role of stakeholders—teachers, policymakers, and institutions—in ensuring the holistic development of students.
Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani emphasized the critical role of Early Childhood Education (ECE) in shaping children’s futures and reducing educational disparities in Meghalaya. He underlined the government’s role in driving quality education and the importance of equipping children with the tools they need to compete and thrive. He called for collective efforts to provide children with the support necessary for both academic and personal success, adding that continued collaboration is key to meeting educational goals in the coming years.
Speaking on the occasion, Ganesan P., Divisional Forest Officer, West Garo Hills, emphasized the college’s commitment to expanding its outreach through training and capacity-building initiatives. He stressed the need to empower educators, caregivers, and child welfare professionals to ensure effective implementation of the national curriculum framework.
Earlier, in her welcome address, Dr. Jyoti V. Vastrad, Dean of CCS, CAU(I), Tura, highlighted the importance of the new curriculum framework in shaping skilled educators and supporting holistic child development.
The inaugural programme also witnessed the presence of JSD Maiong, member of the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, and other dignitaries and officials.
Key highlights of the day included the inauguration of a boys’ hostel, ceremonial planting of saplings by the chief guest, and the release of a compendium aligned with the workshop’s objectives.
The workshop features technical sessions and aims to create a platform for dialogue among educators, policymakers, and community leaders to foster innovative and culturally rooted approaches to early childhood education.
