TURA, Nov 3: Shocking news have surfaced of two underage girls being sexually assaulted in two separate incidents in the Garo Hills on November 1st and prompt action by police have led to the arrest of both the prime accused in the both cases, which took place in in the South and West Garo Hills districts.
The first reported case took place in Jadigittim area of South Garo Hills where the minor daughter was raped by her stepfather at her home on the evening of November 1st.
The aggrieved mother approached Jadigittim police outpost to report the crime and her husband, who was a jhum cultivator, identified as Cheng Ch Marak was promptly arrested. A case under the POCSO Act has been registered against him under Baghmara women police station.
On the same night of November 1st another minor girl who was returning home with two male friends was seized by a group of criminals in Chibinang area under Phulbari police station jurisdiction in West Garo Hills and taken to an isolated place and raped.
The 14 year old girl was being escorted home by her two male friends when the incident took place.
While police say that the criminals took advantage after seeing the motorcycle develop a mechanical fault, the father of the victim, in his police complaint, states that the criminals blocked their way near Chibinang Durga Mandir turning point at 10 O’clock in the night.
The gang of around five young men after accosting the girl and her two friends started assaulting the two boys while one of the criminals identified as Zakirul Islam forcibly took away the girl in a motorbike to commit the crime.
“Our police station was alerted about the incident the same night and we rushed a team to the site. We managed to locate the two boys and also found that the victim had managed to return home. She revealed that she had been sexually assaulted by one person. That person has been identified as Zakirul Islam and we arrested him from Chibinang the same night,” informed West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham T Sangma.
Besides Islam, three other men who were part of the gang have also been arrested while one other accused has fled his home and is currently absconding.
The accused men have been identified as Zakirul Islam of Chibinang, Rakif Rahman, Bhima Sainasi, Laddu Islam (all hailing from Chibinang) and Kaushik Gupta of Bhogularbita, Phulbari.
