Guwahati, Mar 24: After much speculation Congress on Saturday announced the name of Uday Shankar Hazarika as its candidate for the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency.
Hazarika will be in a straight fight with two-term BJP MP Pradhan Baruah. Lakhimpur constituency will go to the polls in the first phase on April 19. He had left the ruling BJP a few months ago and joined the Congress.
The Congress is contesting 13 out of the 14 seats in Assam, and though the party announced candidates in 12 seats on March 12, the nominee for Lakhimpur was not declared.
Ending to all the speculations that Rani Narah, three time Congress MP from Lakhimpur will again get ticket from Lakhimpur the Congress high command has given Shankar Hazarika the ticket.
Hazarika had contested from the saffron party in the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha in 1998, 1999 and 2004 but lost in the election each time.
The Congress has three MPs from the state in the outgoing Lok Sabha, while the BJP has nine, and one seat each is held by the AIUDF and an Independent.
