SHILLONG, JUN 10: United Democratic Party (UDP) chief and cabinet minister Metbah Lyngdoh Wednesday said the party has not yet launched a full-fledged campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election, as the Election Commission of India is yet to announce the poll schedule.
Speaking to reporters, Lyngdoh said the party’s preparations were currently in “low mode” and would scale up once the official notification is issued.
He also cited the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls as a factor influencing the timeline.
“We have not gone into full-swing mode yet because the election date has not been announced or notified. But looking at the SIR exercise that is yet to commence immediately, that is also one factor. Side by side, the election cannot happen. So, we will have to take a call. It all depends on the government and the Election Commission of India,” Lyngdoh said.
He added that the party has begun internal consultations with leaders and workers, but public outreach would begin later.
“We have just started in low mode. Basically, we are going to meet all party leaders, workers, and all well-wishers who wish to attend the programs, but not with the public yet,” he said.

Lyngdoh said the initial response to the party’s prospective candidate has been encouraging.
“The first meeting was very positive, I should say. Overall, I would like to inform you that the feedback and opinions given by the people is that our candidate is one of the best candidates so far, and people would like to see a change as far as this MP by-election is concerned,” he said.
On the possibility of support from RDA alliance partner HSPDP, the UDP chief said no formal communication had been received yet.
“No communication so far from UDP, but we are still keeping the door open for any individual or political party to extend support to our candidate,” Lyngdoh said.
The by-election to the Lok Sabha seat was necessitated following the demise of the sitting MP.
The ECI is yet to announce the election dates.
