Shillong, May 13: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has won the Sohiong Assembly seat, taking its tally in the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly to 12 seats.
UDP candidate Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah comfortably won the polls with a margin of 3422 votes, including postal ballots, securing a total of 16679 votes of the total 32161 votes polled. National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Samlin Malngiang secured the second spot with 13,257 votes.
Synshar received 51.86 percent of the total votes cast.
Mentionably, Samlin was the sitting legislator of the constituency.
At distant third position was Congress candidate S. Osborne Kharjana with 1762 votes.
The polling for Sohiong was held on May 10, after the election in the constituency had to be adjourned due to the sudden demise of former home minister and candidate of UDP, HDR Lyngdoh, on February 20.
Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah is the nephew of (L) HDR Lyngdoh.
