Guwahati, Oct 22: Security forces gunned down a suspected ULFA(I) militant in a fierce gunfight with Assam Rifles personnel at Namsai in Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday night.

The exchange of fire took place in the 6 Mile area under Namsai police station in Namsai district.

“Assam Rifles had received a tip-off regarding the presence of six to seven ULFA(I) cadres in the 6 Mile–Lekang Khampti area. Based on the information, an operation was launched. During the encounter, one ULFA(I) militant was neutralised,” said a police official.

Sources said the group of suspected ULFA(I) militants belonged to the same unit that had recently carried out an attack on an Army Company Operating Base (COB) in Kakopathar, Tinsukia district of Assam, last week.

As the Assam Rifles team approached the location, they came under heavy fire from the militants. The troops retaliated, leading to an intense gun battle in which one militant was killed while the rest managed to escape.

A massive search operation is underway in the area, with the use of helicopters, drones, and tracker dogs. Security personnel have recovered an HK-series automatic rifle, a grenade, and three bags from the encounter site.

The area has been cordoned off, and combing operations are continuing.
