Umsaw Nongbri villagers in Ri Bhoi demand removal of abandoned, rusted BSNL tower

Nongpoh, Sept 3: The Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising of the Seng Samla and Seng Longkmie of Umsaw Nongbri village in Ri Bhoi District on Monday condemned the BSNL for not taking any initiative to remove one tower installed at Umsaw Nongbri, which poses threat to the lives of the villagers.

According to the information, the BSNL telecom company has installed the tower since 2007 at the Umsaw Nongbri village and after a few years the telecom company has not utilised the tower and left it abandoned at the village, posing risk to the lives of the local villagers.

Few of the village elders, including Majest Synthem, Anganwadi worker, TBN. D R Mawphniang, Modingstar Nongpoh, N Tron and Hasting Synthem raised grave concerns over the matter of the abandoned tower in which most of the tower parts have damaged and rusted and pose threat, especially during windy and rainy season.

The President and Chairman of the JAC, Mission Tron, expressed concern and lament over the adamant attitude of the BSNL authority who have not taken any heed over the frequent request by the village heads and elder to remove the tower as it has been abandoned for many years.

“The tower which is abandoned is posing threat as most of the part is rusted and started falling one after one which also risk the lives of school children who pass through the location,” Tron said, adding that, the JAC has strongly demanded BSNL to demolish the tower at the earliest or action will be taken by the JAC.
