Imphal, Aug 22: The United Naga Council (UNC) has issued a stern warning to the Kuki-Zo community, accusing them of distorting Naga history and fabricating information in their memoranda. The UNC expressed their disappointment and urged the Kuki-Zo community to refrain from such activities.
Highlighting their concerns through a press statement issued on Monday, the UNC claimed that the Kuki-Zo community has propagated numerous fabricated elements in their memoranda, which aim to defame the Nagas. Specifically, the UNC pointed to a memorandum submitted on August 16, 2023, by 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs to the Prime Minister of India. This memorandum sought the establishment of key administrative positions, mirroring their persistent demand for separate administration.
The United Naga Council emphasized their ongoing efforts to mediate the ethnic conflict between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities through dialogue. Regrettably, progress has not met their expectations.
In their statement, the UNC expressed their dismay at what they perceive as blatant falsehoods, imbalanced historical narratives, and fabricated information within statements and memoranda issued by the Kuki-Zo community. The UNC deemed these actions tantamount to distorting Naga history and insulting the Naga people.
The UNC emphasized their awareness of the challenges faced by the Kuki-Zo people due to the ongoing ethnic conflict. Despite this understanding, they felt compelled to voice their opposition to the issues presented in the Kuki-Zo community’s memoranda. These issues, as asserted by the UNC, pose a significant threat to the very existence and inherent rights of the Nagas, particularly in Manipur.
Regarding land concerns, the UNC reiterated their opposition to the creation of new districts in 2016, which they consider an unresolved matter. The division of districts from Senapati and Chandel districts, according to the UNC, was a product of the Congress government’s appeasement policy. Therefore, the UNC remains steadfastly against demands for separate administration that involve these districts.
The UNC also criticized the representation of the Kuki-Zo people to the Union Government, and Israeli Prime Minister, European Parliament, and UNO. They viewed these representations as being founded on a false territorial basis and an attempt to mislead authorities.
“The name Kukis were first heard sometime between 1830-1840 and therefore, ‘Kuki hills’ that appear in the fourth para of the mentioned memo to the Prime Minister of Israel is non-existence and utopian concoction,” UNC said.
“And, what is mentioned in the memorandum as the area of ‘Outer Manipur’ for the creation of Kuki state (for the Kukis only excluding the Zo peoples?) also with Kuki Hills which may exist somewhere else. Do the Kukis speak with sense? Such wild venture will lead the Kukis to nowhere today and in future. It is sheer attempt to script bad history for unending enmity between us,” it further added.
Additionally, the UNC raised concerns about the influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh into Manipur, leading to the expansion of villages and creation of new settlements. This, according to the UNC, threatens the indigenous population’s demographic balance.
The UNC said the Nagas are not with the Kukis in matters of separate administration and their territorial claim. “Moreover, it is completely uncanny and unfortunate on the part of the Kuki-Zo peoples to have clubbed Chandel district along with the so called Tengnoupal district together with Churachandpur district as their land,” it concluded.
