Shillong, Dec 5: Meghalaya is taking significant strides to bolster its infrastructure as the state prepares to host a series of high-profile international music events in the coming months. The arrival of global pop icon Ed Sheeran, legendary Canadian singer Bryan Adams, and American rock band Mr. Big reflects the growing global recognition of “brand Meghalaya” as a premier destination for culture and tourism.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh emphasized the significance of these events, stating, “Meghalaya is fast emerging as a global cultural hub. Hosting artists of this caliber demonstrates our potential and boosts our efforts to position the state on the world map.”
In anticipation of these landmark events, the Meghalaya government has accelerated efforts to enhance the state’s connectivity and infrastructure. The expansion of Shillong Airport’s runway is a priority project aimed at accommodating larger aircraft and enabling direct flights from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru.
Speaking about the progress, Lyngdoh remarked, “The work is moving forward in a very aggressive and positive manner. Improved air connectivity will make Meghalaya more accessible to international visitors and bolster our tourism economy.”
Additionally, the state plans to introduce a dedicated helicopter service linking Guwahati to key tourist destinations such as Umroi Airport, Umiam, Sohra, Dawki, and New Shillong. This initiative will provide seamless travel for tourists, ensuring they can explore the state’s natural and cultural wonders with ease.
Global artists shine the spotlight on Meghalaya
The state’s enhanced infrastructure will set the stage for a historic lineup of performances.
– Bryan Adams will kick off the season with his first-ever concert in Meghalaya on December 10, 2024, at Shillong’s Polo Grounds.
– Ed Sheeran, the Grammy-winning sensation, will perform in Shillong on February 12, 2025, as part of his India tour across six cities.
– Mr. Big, the iconic American rock band, will headline the Bloomverse Festival on February 14, 2025, at Umiam, marking the Shillong leg of their farewell “The BIG Finish Tour.”
With a mix of world-class performances and proactive development strategies, Meghalaya is on the cusp of a transformative journey, showcasing to the world its potential as a vibrant and accessible cultural destination.
Tourism Minister Lyngdoh highlighted how these events align with Meghalaya’s broader vision, stating, “These performances will not only entertain but also serve as a testament to the state’s readiness to host international events, further solidifying Meghalaya’s reputation as a global cultural and tourism destination.”
Meanwhile Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and his government have been steadfast in their commitment to elevating Meghalaya’s global profile. Beyond the infrastructure upgrades, initiatives are underway to create a sustainable tourism ecosystem that balances growth with the preservation of the state’s unique heritage.
