Imphal, Dec 18: An unexploded 51 mm mortar bomb was discovered near Koirengei, close to Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s private residence in Luwangshangbam on Tuesday, triggering panic among local residents. According to eyewitnesses, a rocket-propelled bomb was fired the previous night but failed to detonate, leading to heightened security measures in the area.

Authorities have since intensified security, with a comprehensive investigation underway. The incident comes at a time of heightened unrest in Manipur, marked by a series of violent attacks targeting civilians and security forces.

In a related development, security forces arrested one more suspect in connection with Saturday’s killing of two migrant workers from Bihar, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to eight. The murders have fueled fears of targeted violence against migrants in the region.

Meanwhile, in a significant breakthrough, security forces thwarted a potential terror attack with the recovery of five Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) from the Maphitel Ridge area in Imphal East district. Acting on specific intelligence, the Indian Army and Manipur Police launched a joint search operation and discovered the IEDs, weighing a total of 21.5 kilograms, hidden in multiple locations.

The Army’s bomb detection dog, Eva, along with the Bomb Disposal Squad, played a crucial role in locating and safely recovering the explosives. The operation is part of an intensified search campaign being conducted by the Army and police forces across the Imphal Valley to neutralize potential threats.

The series of incidents underscores the volatile security situation in Manipur, with authorities ramping up efforts to prevent further escalation. Security forces have vowed to maintain vigilance and prevent any attempts to destabilize the region.
