Shillong, Oct 25: Union Textiles Minister Girija Singh began his two-day visit to Meghalaya on Friday, with a clear mission: to promote Indian brands on the global stage. This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance the visibility and appeal of Indian textiles in international markets.
On the first day, Singh inaugurated the permanent campus of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Umsawli and addressed the institute’s 12th convocation ceremony. Joined by Meghalaya Textiles Minister Paul Lyndoh and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita, Singh emphasized the role of the graduates in elevating Indian brands worldwide.
“India has historically focused on foreign designs. Now, it’s your turn to carry the torch of Indian brands wherever you go,” he remarked, encouraging the students to harness their creativity and skills to make a mark on the global fashion landscape.
Speaking on NIFT, Singh said the state-of-the-art facility, the only one in North-East India, will empower students and strengthen our nation’s textile industry,” he noted. The campus aims to educate 750 students across six programs, contributing significantly to employment opportunities in the sector.
Following the inauguration, Singh traveled to Ri Bhoi district to review the Aspirational District Programme, discussing with local officials the implementation and impact of central government schemes aimed at fostering local businesses and promoting the indigenous textile industry.
On October 26, Singh is scheduled to visit the Eri Silk Village at Umden, where he will meet with local weavers and artisans. This visit aims to highlight the importance of traditional Indian textiles and their potential to capture international markets. Singh’s itinerary also includes interactions with beneficiaries at the Umkon-1 Anganwadi Centre and the Margher Primary Health Centre, further emphasizing the government’s commitment to community development.
In his address at NIFT, Singh underscored the textile sector as a major employment generator, second only to agriculture. He praised NIFT’s Vision Next initiative for setting new standards in design and innovation forecasting, which he believes will empower the next generation of designers to effectively promote Indian textiles globally.
